I found the electronic toys like Leap Pad to be disappointing for my kids when they were young (preschool-ish). The Leap pads didn't hold their attention and they just never really used it no matter how many new inserts we bought. Those cartridges finally became pretend cookies.
Did you have the older original version of the LeapPad with the flip ring books? I've had some good luck with this newer product when using it with kids in the school system. None of the kids I used it with owned one though, so I'm not sure how excited they would have been if they had one waiting for them at home. Every week they ask to play with it though, so I often use it as a reward for just a few minutes at the end of our sessions. Thanks for your comment.
