Two minutes of fine motor warm-up before handwriting changes everything. Hands that have been activated produce neater letters with less fatigue. Here are 25 warm-ups, each 2-5 minutes, that I have used with hundreds of teachers and OTs.
How to use these cards
Pick a card. Demonstrate first. Run for 2-5 minutes. Stop while the kids still want more.
Hand strength
1. Squeeze counts. Make a fist. Squeeze tight, count to five out loud. Release. Repeat 10 times. Switch hands.
2. Towel wringing. Hold a paper towel between two hands. Twist as hard as you can. Reverse direction.
3. Air piano. Pretend the air is a piano keyboard. Play with all 10 fingers, slow then fast.
4. Thumb-and-finger taps. Touch thumb to index, middle, ring, pinky. Then back. Faster.
5. Eraser pinch race. Pinch off a tiny piece of eraser between thumb and index only. Drop. Pick up between thumb and middle. Then ring. Then pinky.
In-hand manipulation
6. Coin shuffle. Three pennies in one hand. Move them to fingertips one at a time, then back to palm.
7. Pencil flip. Hold pencil at one end. Flip it end-over-end so the eraser is now at the writing end.
8. Bead transfer. Pick up a bead from a bowl. Move it to the back of your hand without using the other hand.
9. Crumple and smooth. Crumple scrap paper into a ball using only one hand. Then smooth it flat using only that hand.
10. Pom-pom hide and find. Three pom-poms in one hand. Hide them inside a fist while keeping one in the fingertips.
Bilateral coordination
11. Cross-the-midline tap. Tap right knee with left hand. Tap left knee with right hand. 20 times, fast.
12. Marching elbows-to-knees. Lift left knee, bring right elbow to it. Switch.
13. Air clap rhythm. Clap. Hands on shoulders. Clap. Hands on hips. Clap. Hands on knees.
14. Paper tear contest. Two hands hold the same scrap paper. Tear in straight lines. Make 4 strips.
15. Lacing pretend. Pretend to thread a needle. Pretend to pull thread through. Pretend to tie a knot.
Pencil prep
16. Pencil pickup race. Drop a pencil. Pick it up with one hand only, fingers not palm. Twenty times.
17. Tripod taps. Hold pencil in tripod grasp. Tap eraser end on desk 20 times without losing grip.
18. Roll the pencil. Pencil between palms. Roll back and forth.
19. Pencil walk. Hold pencil at the eraser end. Walk your fingers down to the writing end.
20. Lazy 8s. Draw figure-8s on paper laid sideways.
Whole-body warm-ups
21. Wall pushes. Stand arm length from wall. Push hard for 10 seconds. Three times.
22. Chair pushes. Sit. Hands on seat next to hips. Push down to lift bottom slightly. Hold 5 seconds.
