You may have seen the commercials from Disney featuring ways that various people celebrate and demonstrate their #DisneySide. A few weeks ago I learned that I was picked from thousands to host a themed DisneySide At Home Celebration Party. I was excited and overwhelmed all in the same breath. As I plan for the party in just a few weeks, I was thinking really hard about my DisneySide and the best way for me to show it in a way that’s unique and personal to our family.
So while we haven’t had the opportunity to experience the magic of the parks with Gavin yet, like most 4 1/2 year-old boys he’s fixated on Cars and Planes, and goes to bed each night singing the songs from the Frozen soundtrack. He sees the castle at the start of DVD movies as well as during commercials on tv and asks, “When can we go to Mickey Mouse’s house?” Throughout the year and at Toy Fair while I scour exhibit halls and media events looking for the best Disney toys, our daily Disneyside activities at home include watching episodes on Disney Junior featuring Handy Manny, Sheriff Callie and Doc McStuffins and playing lots of Disney themed games.
While I was provided with a lot of materials to host the party that include Mickey Mouse themed decorations, Craisin snacks, cookie cutters, tattoos, stickers, face painting ideas, Mickey and Minnie prints, HP photo prints, and a new piece of American Tourister carry-on luggage, my Disneyside is about sharing our love of games, books and family activities.
While the magic certainly happens at the park, such is the case with our family, it’s not feasible for everyone to plan a frequent vacation there. So much of the downtime in our daily lives is consumed by technology with apps and television shows that I hope through our celebration party we can inspire others to enjoy board games and activities that promote the cohesiveness of family, while creating memories and working cooperatively.
