Every K-5 classroom could be calmer with the right $20-100 of basic sensory tools. Tools that quietly do their job.
Tier 1: Under $20 essentials
Fidget tools ($5). Textured rubber tangles, putty, small stretchy figures.
Earmuff-style noise-reducing headphones, two pairs ($10). Construction-grade. Any student can grab them.
Wiggle seat cushion ($5-10). Lets a wiggly kid wiggle without leaving the chair.
Tier 2: Under $50
Therapy putty in three resistances ($15). Five-minute warm-ups before handwriting.
Weighted lap pad ($15). 3-5 pounds. The most-requested tool in my school caseload.
Vibration tools ($10). Handheld massager or vibrating pencil grip.
Textured tape ($5). Strip on the underside of a desk for quiet fidgeting.
Tier 3: Under $100
Body sock ($25). Deep pressure throughout the body.
Floor-rocker chair or T-stool ($30). Active sitting builds core strength.
Larger weighted blanket ($30). 5-8 pounds, washable.
Visual countdown timer ($10). More accessible than spoken time.
Three rules
1. They are for everyone, not just one student. 2. They are tools, not toys. 3. No permission needed for headphones, fidget, wiggle cushion.
For principals
$20 per room for Tier 1. $400-600 per elementary school. Cheaper than one outsourced behavior specialist or one disciplinary meeting.
