Chobani Greek Yogurt for Kids (contest)

Being a full-time working mom, yogurt in general has been a godsend in my life, not only for my own lunches, but those small individualized cups are so quick and easy to pack for my son’s lunch for daycare . Being that I work in several different school systems and over the course of the week can eat my lunch with dozens of professionals, based on my observations, Chobani greek yogurt has become quite popular and often a topic of lunchtime conversation because of the significant amount of protein packed in each and every 6 oz. cup.

In all honesty, I tried to buy the regular Chobani yogurt on a few occasions several years ago. Though I preferred the thicker texture, it was a sharper, more bitter taste than I could become accustomed to, making it difficult to finish the entire cup. We often resorted to using it as our yogurt of choice though in homemade smoothies simply because of the protein. When I was pregnant with Gavin three years ago, I also found it difficult to consume the daily amounts of protein suggested for growing a healthy baby. At the time greek yogurt was not as popular, but it probably would have been a great way to meet the protein guidelines.

Several months ago on a trip to a local BJ’s Wholesale, I noticed one week there was a case of Chobani greek yogurt for kids, Chobani Champions. Inside there were two flavors, Honey Banana and Very Berry. At almost $10 for the case, each week I passed it up, waiting for one of these yogurt coupons to magically appear in the monthly circular. I was skeptical and didn’t want to end up with a whole case of yogurt our family wouldn’t eat, so I didn’t buy it.

Until one week Gavin and I happened to shop on “Sample Saturday.” We were able to try both of the varieties of the Chobani Champions yogurt, and from that point on it has become a staple in our refrigerator. The cups are smaller (3.5 ounces vs. 6 ounces), but the yogurt is definitely sweeter, and 8 grams of protein are packed into 1 – 3.5 ounce cup! We really like to also add Kashi Go Lean Crunch granola cereal to the yogurt for even more protein.

When Chobani asked if I would like to help them spread the word about their 2 new flavors, Vanilla Chocolate Chunk and Orange Vanilla, I couldn’t wait for them to arrive. The Vanilla Chocolate Chunk is yummy, though I wouldn’t call the chocolate pieces inside chunks. To me a chunk is similar to a chocolate chip, but in reality these chunks were more like shavings.  Though I am honestly not overjoyed giving my toddler yogurt with chocolate, I would prefer a fruit based flavor, being an occupational therapist who works with children who have feeding disorders or who are very picky eaters, we often look for transitional foods to help kids ease their way into a new texture or flavor. Yogurts are great as dips for graham crackers and believe me I can tell you the parents of significantly picky eater will be thrilled their child even attempted a new food. So if the chocolate variety allows kids to get some vitamins, consume the protein they need to learn at school and expand their food repertoire, I’m all for it in moderation.

The new Orange Vanilla flavor is also delicious, though it does have very small bits of orange that are present in the yogurt and could pose a challenge for texture sensitive kids. Both my husband and son have enjoyed both of the new varieties of the Chobani Champions yogurt. Though the Honey Banana and Very Berry are still my most favorite, flavors appeal to people’s taste buds differently, what ever you prefer, I don’t think you will be disappointed.
